Veganism has definitely made death easier to talk about for me. I don’t know how meateaters can do it, how they can talk to their kids about mourning humans and pets and then also tell them they made animals die just so they could have a particular meal.
I wrote about the spawning salmon here. Well, the next year we went there, and there was a dead fish on the bank of the creek again, and I let my daughter know the fish was dead, and she said, “So that’s what our friends eat who aren’t vegan?” And of course we talked a whole bunch more about it, but later I overheard her telling a friend, “I don’t think that cookie is vegan. I think it has fish in it or something.” So funny. These have been such interesting conversations, and I love that veganism allows me to always discuss it with the consistency of not wanting to harm.
