Congrats on this journey!

My kiddo starts kindergarten in September, and then my husband and I want to try our hand at a children’s book (me writing, him illustrating). We have no illusions it’ll be easy, which is why we’re putting it off till she’s in school.

I’m curious about your decision to find an illustrator on your own. We’re planning that because he’s the artist, but everything I’ve read so far is that publishers usually want an author to send them the words and then they’ll find an illustrator for it.
