I was very clear early on with my partner that I never wanted a diamond. He got me an old, worn, silver amethyst ring. I love it!

Until reading this, it had never occurred to me that saving up for a ring was supposed to be seen as a symbol of money-earning a man would promise to do. My husband certainly never promised to earn a lot of money, haha. And neither have I.
