I’ve only been to Israel for Birthright, so pardon my possible ignorance, but it seems there is a huge contingency of secular Jews, who still observe rituals, but don’t have dogmatic beliefs?
Our Tel Aviv hotel had the elevators automatically set to open on every floor for all of Shabbat, and there was pre-torn toilet paper. To me, these were fascinating fixes to keep with the practice of no “work” on Shabbat, while not reflecting any belief outside of the practice of “rest.”
I’m sorry your experience has been less open.
