Love this piece!

My kiddo just turned 4. We’ve read Jacob’s New Dress and Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress, and there’s a lot of good there (I love the descriptions of why Morris loves the dress), but I have the same complaint as you. For my kid’s early years, we were able to shield her from this bullying mentality of gender roles, so the books were actually the first she’d heard of anyone saying a boy shouldn’t wear a dress. These books definitely have their place, but I agree we need to have more examples where people are nonchalantly wearing whatever.

Our tactic at the beginning was to randomly assign pronouns to book characters, but recently my kid’s becoming way more aware of gender expectations.

Excited to follow you and read more of your writing!
