I’m really fascinated by the nature vs. nurture question. Attending preschool-aged library storytimes with my daughter, it’s almost entirely little girls. I invited some friends who have little boys and got the same response: “He’d never be able to sit still and listen.”

I can’t know their parenting experiences, but from my vantage, it definitely looks like parents of girls being more likely than parents of boys to actively socialize their daughters to be respectful listeners.

My kid will run around in circles for hours straight too, but it’s a priority of mine to teach her listening skills.

I think most of the differences we see are socialization, and so I’m hopeful they can change over time, and we can all communicate better and more equitably.
