Wow. Fantastic piece. I was never a fan, but a lot of my high school friends were, and in the aftermath of Columbine, my priority was always to defend my goth friends against the widespread assumption that they were all future school shooters. Like, if we had canceled Manson back then, then society also would've trashed all the harmless goth kids right along with him. So at the time it felt like we had to insist that there was nothing wrong with Manson.
So I love that you're coming at this from the perspective of someone who was a fan.
